On Display: Presidential Inaugurations

In April 1789, George Washington took the Oath of Office in New York City. The Constitution provided the words of the oath but little else. As a result, much of pageantry today is based heavily on precedent and tradition. Inaugural events have become more elaborate over the years, including parades, balls, receptions, and other public events. More than just a celebration of one individual or political party, Inaugurations symbolize the peaceful transfer of power - a cornerstone of American democracy.
